Dear Fellow Writers,

Well, here we go again - conference time!  The League of Utah Writers Roundup is just around the corner - September 2008!  And I am so excited to be with lots of like-minded people again. I'm so looking forward talking to you all about what's near and dear to our hearts - writing!  As I mentioned before, The Eden Writers are not having a conference this year because the League of Utah Writers is having their roundup at the same time, in the same area. But, as it happens, the LUW Blue Quill Chapter is hosting this conference! And the Eden Writers are members of this LUW chapter.  So here we are again, all the usual suspects, including other Blue Quill members such as Natalie Pace, LUW President Elect, hosting the LUW Roundup in beautiful, historic 'Junction City,' better known as Ogden, Utah (see right).

Please go to Luwrite.com and read all about it!  We have great agents and editors coming to the conference - from New York, California and local!  We tried to cover all genres.  It's going to be a blast! We expect between 150 and 200 writers!  And we have 77 one-on-one meetings available with the powers to be.  We will soon have the complete schedule on LUW web site.

We also have a wonderful pre-conference, full day class, presented by the well known professional editor and author, Elizabeth Lyon from Washington State!  She has written six books about writing and has helped many a writer on that difficult road to publication.  Elizabeth's pre-conference class will be on Friday, September 12, at the same venue of the conference - The Ogden Marriott in Ogden, Utah.  The cost is $45.00, including lunch.  This cost is in addition to the conference cost of $98.00.  Elizabeth will work with us on Revision Techniques for Fiction and Memoir Writing.  "Gain instant and long-term results by learning how to systematically revise your stories in this roll-up-the-sleeves workshop."  So, this class will be perfect for those of you who have a finished manuscript, before you go through your manuscript "one more time."  Just go to Luwrite.com and click on the LUW Home Page to register for Elizabeth's pre-conference class, as well as the LUW Roundup!

The League of Utah Writers Roundup is a bit longer than the Eden Writers Fall Conference last year. Yippee!  More time with fellow writers!  The kickoff dinner is on Friday night, September 12. Saturday will provide a whole day of numerous classes, catering to all genres.  The conference closes with another keynote dinner on Saturday night.  All of this for a minimal $98.00!  Of course you have to be a member ($24) to get this great price.  (The conference cost for non-members are $160.) The price includes everything except the one-on-one meetings ($25) with the agents and editors.

I'm very excited about our keynote speaker this year. It is not only because he was also born in South Africa!  His name is Stanley Trollip.  He co-authored "A Carrion Death," with Michael Pears.  They write under the pen name Michael Stanley.  Michael and Stanley are wonderful proof that perseverance and believing in your dream - can make dreams come true - after 20 years!  A Carrion Death, has had amazing reviews.  Here are some:

"Kubu is also hugely appealing - big and solid and smart enough to grasp all angles of this mystery... Readers may be lured to Africa by the landscape, but it takes a great character like Kubu to win our loyalty." New York Times Book Review, April 13, 2008

"This impressive debut from Stanley, the South African writing team of Michael Sears and Stanley Trollip.  The intricate plotting, a grisly sense of realism and numerous topical motifs... make this a compulsively readable novel. " Publishers Weekly, February 25, 2008

"Kubu himself is a marvelous creation, his distinctive characteristics - his weight, his taste in music - as well considered as the plot.  And if his Botswana is more violent than McCall Smith's, it is depicted with its distinctive beauty intact as well.  This is a marvelous debut... " Boston Globe

"...fast-moving story... Rich with the atmosphere of modern Botswana, and peopled with interesting and well-drawn characters, this is an exciting debut... Recommended to readers who like the Botswana setting of Alexander McCall Smith's stories and all readers who enjoy international police procedurals with a strong sense of place." Booklist, February 1, 2008

Stan will also present a class on 'how to co-write a book.'  So come to the League of Utah Writers' Roundup and meet Stan Trollip and learn all about how to become a best selling author, in no less than four languages!  A Carrion Death is published in French, Italian, English and American.  Our lunch time keynote speaker will be our very own Eden Writer, Wendy Toliver!  Her book, "The Secret Life of a Teenage Siren," is now in it's second print!  And her next book, "Miss Match," will be out early next year.

Reserve a hotel room as soon as possible!  The rooms are filling fast and I am not just saying this - we had a block reserved (at the special price) and those filled up already!  We had to block off more rooms and hope that will be enough.  Also remember to practice your book pitch for those one-on-one interviews - ten minutes can go very fast.  Also practice that one-liner (elevator pitch) because you never know who you run into at the conference!

Hope to see you all in September!
Kind regards,
Drienie Hattingh
